To the Fatherless Who Father

Maybe you saw what your friends dads were like, or had uncles that showed you what it looked like to have a dad or be a dad. Maybe your grandfather was there for you. Maybe there weren’t any men that were kind to you. You might have messed it up pretty bad when you became a parent yourself. To those of you who worked your asses off learning how to be there for your family, for your own kids, for the children of others, foster kids, neighborhood kids, kids you coach or teach, please know that I see you. It’s like reinventing a wheel for a car you’re driving at highway speeds. For those who have to learn what they were never taught, and teach what they were never shown, the effort you make is benefiting everyone. And it’s Father’s Day, but this message is for everyone that’s healing. You’re healing the world by healing yourself. You’re resetting the broken bones of the past for the future. It’s hard, it’s painful, and I see you and I’m grateful.
